Name: Danny Southerly Position: Regional Manager – Services Years with the company: 11
1) What was your childhood like?
I was a military brat growing up in Fayetteville/Ft Bragg, NC. I also lived in Germany at a young age, and it opened my eyes to how big the world is. There was so much more out there. My Dad was a First Sergeant in the 82nd Airborne; Mom was the more lenient roll (I got away with a lot as she ran buffer to my Dad, I was a lucky kid!), she was very caring and nurturing.
2) Who was a hero to you growing up? Why?
My Grandfather, a retired Vietnam and Korean War veteran. He was business when it was business time, then all fun and games after. He taught me so many life values. My dad was deployed a lot, so my Grandad was always there. I wanted to grow up to be just like him and my dad.
3) What are your hobbies?
I’ve always been an adrenaline junkie. So, anything extreme, I’m in. My Family and I spend summers on our Wake Boat surfing and wakeboarding, fall time is Motocross and Hunting Season, and then in winter it’s Snowboard time.
4) How did you end up in metrology? Did you go to school for it?
My background is in Aerospace Engineering and Jet Propulsion. I was a jet engine specialist in the United States Air Force. I had enough cross-referenced education to transition out of aviation maintenance to metrology. I never had any real exposure to metrology other than understanding and using instruments maintained by the USAF PMEL (Precision Measurement Equipment Lab).
5) How did you come to be at API?
Art Kietlinski and Ron Hicks discovered me in 2008; they were in the beginning stages of starting API Technical Services at the time. I think there were only 4 of us. I was hired to be the Calibration Engineering Manager and was tasked to develop a full ISO 17025 Certified Calibration facility in Newport News, VA (where API Services is headquartered). We took on all API laser tracker calibrations and level 1 and level 2 repairs across North America.
6) What are your roles and responsibilities with API?
As Regional Manager for our Services Division, I manage a team of highly skilled service engineers and the Dallas, TX Service Division facility. This encompasses overseeing Operations and Logistics of all contract service work we perform in the Central United States, from Canada to Mexico. I still enjoy being on jobs and in the trenches from time-to-time as well.
7) What sets API apart from other metrology companies in your mind?
The fact that we are small enough to listen to our customers’ pains yet big enough to act and help them with solutions. API is proud of all the relationships we have built along the way and will always strive to provide the best service and support possible.
8) What API Product or Service are you most excited to tell people about?
API Services is one of the most elite metrology service organizations in the world. Some of the applications we have had the honor to be a part of are truly amazing. Not everyone knows the impact metrology has on everything around you.
9) What about API’s future excites you?
What we will be bringing to the market! It is an exciting time for API. Look Out!
10) What does “Nothing Beyond Measure” mean to you?
To me it’s an expression of our Innovation, we are Automation Precision Innovation to our core.
